I created an album mix with VAC 3.1 into an MPEG2 file. I then used Ulead VideoStudio7 to edit and add two song for the sound track. I then saved the project as an MPEG2 file and all looked good. Problem is this MPEG will only play on my computer. My wife's machine has XP Corp with all updates, WMP 9, etc but it will not play it or retrieve a codec to enable it. I tried it on several machines at work too. I thought I saw a comment somewhere about this either in this forum or the support FAQs, but I can't find it. Any thoughts?

Windows media player need the third party decoder for playing mpeg2 file. Your computer can play Mpeg2 file because Ulead VideoStudio installed the decoder. I don't know the licence from Ulead whether it is valid for installing their software in another computer in house. If allow, you can install VideoStudio in your wife's computer.
Actually, there have some web sites providing sharewares which contain the WMP mpeg2 decoder. You can search from internet.

coolpop,

After capture and edit of your video in Ulead, what do you do with it? Do you burn to a DVD? A VCD? A CD?

If you are making a DVD, it should play on your TV, through your DVD Player, with no problems. If playing back as a DVD on another computer, that computer needs to have DVD playback software. You can buy this software at most retailers, or even find shareware on the internet. WMP cannot substitute for ALL video codecs.

Why would you want to play your video on another computer as a VCD or CD? The resulting video file would be huge, and ... you could never really tell whether the other computer had sufficient resources (i.e. 3-D video card, sufficient RAM, 300MHz + processor, etc.).

Ulead Video Studio was really designed for editing video clips for playback through a DVD player, camcorder, or VHS tape - to TV. While it will also playback on another computer, you will find it limited for the reasons mentioned above and, as you discovered.

All I wanted to do was show off my album at work. I put the MPEG2 file on a CD thinking that most machines today have Media Player and can play a movie file. Yes the file is big -370Mb- but playing it shouldnt take that much resources. I used the same file and burned it on DVD with Video Studio and everything works fine - it plays on my DVD player and my computer. I know the computer has to have a player and software to play DVDs - that's why I took the movie file to work - most machines there only have cd's. I guess the problem is they don't have the MPEG2 codec.

Thanks for the replys.

coolpop,

From your description, I think the problem with your work computers may be that they don't have a 3D capable video card installed. The codec required to play your video (if I understood your correctly), is pretty standard. Therefore, it more than likely is the 3D requirement. It could also be a slow CD player, or insufficent RAM to play a 370MB CD. This of course, depends on the age of your work computers and the system resources available. I say this because many work computers are low budget, without many high end features. Make an apple-to-apple comparison by using Windows "system tools" to check the system information. This will tell you what you may be lacking.

coolpop,
As I said, what you need is a mpeg2 decoder. You can download a mpeg2 decoder from web site http://www.elecard.com/download/.
This is a shareware, and works with Windows Media Player and RealOne. WMP and RealOne don't include a build-in mpeg2 decoder.

I understand that now but the network is locked up in chains by the IS department. You can't install ANYTHING. I just made an MPEG1 movie file and it played ok. Not as good quality but they were still suitably impressed. Thanks for all the help.
