I used the uncompressed frame capture to capture to avi format which I then convert to svcd format. (This give me a very good picture quality). However, whenever the resulting avi files are more than 2GB in size, the Windows Media Player can't open it. The Pinancle Studio , WinProducer or Ulead Video also won't open the files either. I have latest VAC. Any ideas?

Many video editing software have size limit on AVI file (2G or 4G).

I have media player 8. It works fine with avi files under 2.1GB. Avi files over 2.1GB gives error message "ClassFactory cannot supply requested class". Try your suggestion. Open big file (error), then open small file (ok), then open big file again (error).

My WinDVD4 have the same problem; playing if the file size under 2.1GB.

A check with Gspot AVI Codec Information said that the AVI header is corrupted. Detailed - "while processing chunk /RIFF:AVI found bad length value 192 at file offset 0x00000010".

FYI, I have partitioned the hard drive (C & D). I think it is of FAT file system. How do you convert the file system from FAT to NTFS?

Just open a command prompt and type convert and it will display the following text.

Converts FAT volumes to NTFS.

CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] [/CvtArea:filename] [/NoSecurity] [/X]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS.
/V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
/CvtArea:filename
Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be
the place holder for NTFS system files.
/NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security
settings to be accessible by everyone.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.

Example would be if I wanted to convert drive e: to NTFS:

Convert e: /FS:NTFS /X <This would dismount a FAT or FAT32 volume and convert to NTFS. Windows 2000 or XP is a requirement to read NTFS.

Do this "AT YOUR OWN RISK" if you are not PC savy then get someone that is or be willing to reinstall if it goes south. I am not responsible for your actions or your PC Skills or lack of Wink.

Hi, guys !

Thanks for all the replies. I just found out than avi (type 1) files itself have it own limitation. It doesn't work if the files is > 2GB.

A search with google for "AVI 2GB error" give me numerous info and some solution to this problem. But not being PC savvy Razz, I don't want to take the risk of messing up my PC.

I guess I have to use other lossless video codec for the capture which give smaller file size, at least can play throughout one cycle of the style like the winter1.

If anyone have recommendation of lossless video codec to use, just let me know.

Michael,

Converting your drives to NTFS IS painless and you won't lose any data, just don't power off your machine in the process, or something silly like that and you'll have no worries.

Wrangler95,

Thank for your reply. Will try to work on the things suggested by you guys.

FYI, I did manage to capture from my videocam using Pinancle. The file size was about 3.9GB (as I learnt from you that this is due to the FAT file system limitation). No problem viewing and editing it.

But wih VAC, I face the above problem. Where do you think the problem lies?

Since there was not much respond to my problem, I can only guess that my case is an isolated one.

"if it helps, and without making things more complicated for you, if you are having a problem with avi, you can simply convert it. Go here to download ULead's FREE avi file type converter which will allow you to convert between type 1 and type 2 avi. "

did you try to convert type 1 to type 2 and type 2 to type 1 to see which file type you have? What kind of camera do you have? How are you capturing your footage to your PC????

Wrangler95,

I only tested the DV Converter with the AVI files (full frame uncompressed) generated with VAC. And it gives me the message that my file is not DV Type 1 file (regardless whether it is below or exceed 2GB).

I don't keep the AVI files which I captured from the Videocam (already converted to SVCD). I am using the JVC Digital Videocam. I have a firewire connection in my PC.

Just to recap, I am only having problem with AVI files size > 2GB generated from VAC.

Thanks for trying to help me on this. Really appreciated it.
